Burns to the face can be disfiguring and significantly affect one’s wellbeing and daily life at all levels. Beside the cosmetic side, function can be altered tremendously, in terms of chewing, talking, eye opening and closing, not to forget the social part of it. A burn scar on the face is for most, a devastating event which will limit your social life dramatically.
Burns can be classified in 3 groups.
First degree burns are superficial, affecting only the outer layer of the epidermis. You may have erythema and pain but no evidence of bullae. These burns affect skin pigmentation only, but do not scar and only require topical treatment.
Second and third degree burns are deep partial and full thickness burns respectively, which are painful and can result in scaring. These burns require one or multiple interventions.
Fortunately, Dr. Abi Akl has a variety of options to offer patients with burn scars to the face. He can either replace the burned area using local and/or regional flaps and/or skin grafts and at a later stage, he can also use lasers to smoothen the surface of the scars. It is important to know that scars cannot be eliminated but can be significantly improved and become barely visible to the naked eye.
Dr. Abi Akl is an expert in burn scar treatment. During your consultation, he will answer all your concerns and explain to you every step of the procedure and what to expect on the short and long term.
