Ears are fully mature at 6 years of age. Anyone beyond this age is fit to undergo this procedure. Otoplasty, or ear reduction surgery corrects ear deformities, protruding or oversized ears. Ear deformity can be a source of bullying in the young age group, this is why we recommend this surgery to be done the earliest possible. Furthermore, Young tissues are more pliable, which means that the molding capacity of the ear cartilage is easier and the outcome of this procedure can be better for a child than an adult.
Some patients may have elongated or ripped earlobes from the following scenarios:
- Chronic heavy earring usage
- Multiple ear piercings too close together
- Piercing too close to bottom of lobe
- Natural aging process
Earlobe repair can be performed easily and earrings can be worn back after the incision has healed completely within 6 weeks.
This procedure takes 1-2 hours, and it is done under local anesthesia.
What is the recovery period?
You should expect swelling and bruising for couple of days that will improve gradually over the next week. You need to have a head bandage for one week, and a nightly elastic band for 3 to 4 weeks. The stitches are removed after 5 to 7 days, and you can go back to work in 10 days. During the consultation, you will be given detailed instructions to follow before and after your surgery.
What about the scars?
The incision is placed in the natural crease behind the ear. After you have completely healed, the scar will become barely visible.
Dr. Abi Akl is an expert in otoplasty. During your consultation, he will answer all your concerns and explain to you every step of the procedure and what to expect on the short and long term.
