Due to its prevalent exposure to sun, the face is a common area of development of skin cancer. Currently, the best and most efficient technique of skin cancer removal is called Mohs surgery. This procedure is the technique of choice for excising skin cancers around the eyes, nose and ears. It is usually done by a highly trained surgical dermatologist and requires removing layers of tissue at a time. Then the tissue is examined under a microscope to confirm that all cancerous cells are removed and only healthy cells are left.

The goal of Mohs surgery is to minimize the defect size, however, there is always need for reconstruction. This is why it is very important to coordinate with a skilled facial plastic surgeon beforehand, to make sure that the reconstruction is done as soon as possible after Mohs surgery, to guarantee the best result.

There are different options for reconstruction of the resultant defect; this depends on the location, severity and size of the cancerous tissues that were removed. Dr. Abi Akl can use local tissue rearrangement using skin flaps or grafts, hiding the incisions in natural skin creases. Laser skin resurfacing, dermabrasion or chemical peels may be performed at a later stage to smoothen out the skin surface.
This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and its duration varies according to the complexity of the case, usually between 1to 2 hours.
