Dermabrasion consists of removing the superficial layer of the skin which will result in damage of the deep skin layer. This will stimulate the skin to heal and hence, forms a softer layer of skin.
The goal of this procedure is to get rid of superficial as well as deep scaring, acne scar, rosacea and wrinkles. It is done under local anesthesia and takes 30 minutes.
Microdermabrasion is very different than dermabrasion, and is usually done by an esthetician.
What is the recovery period?
You may develop some redness or swelling over the treated area for couple of days that will gradually resolve over the next week. Your skin will start to peel off in the coming 1 to 2 weeks as the new, softer skin appears. It is recommended to use sunscreen and hydrate your skin after dermabrasion to avoid hyperpigmentation.
During your consultation, Dr. Abi Akl will guide you through all the available options of skin resurfacing and together will decide on the best treatment for your case. There is no one size fits all procedure, each case is customized to meet your goal.
